Bursary and Scholarship Applications

WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO HELP STUDENTS FINANCE THEIR POST SECONDARY EDUCATION?

Post-secondary education is expensive, and students should seek out any assistance available to them.  There are many bursaries and scholarships available to grade 12 students.  A bursary is usually based on financial need whereas a scholarship is based on excellence in some area – the arts, athletics, languages etc.  Unlike student loans (which all students do not qualify for), bursaries and scholarships are non-repayable awards. Every bursary or scholarship has its own criteria and deadline which have been established by the donor(s).

Some Definitions

  • Entrance Scholarship - An entrance scholarship is one that is available to students who are proceeding from grade 12 to studies in a specific post-secondary institution.  Provided by the post-secondary institution.

  • Post Secondary - Any program available after completion of high school. Can be at a college, technical school or university.

  • Proof of Registration - many awards require the recipient to provide proof of registration at a post-secondary institution before the award funds will be released.  This can be a proof of registration paid or a confirmation of enrolment letter from the institution itself.  This typically occurs in late August or early September if proof is to be provided to Stanley Humphries Secondary.

  • Deferment - while many awards must be used the school year following a student’s graduation, others allow students to defer, delay or postpone, using the award for up to two full school years.

  • External awards – awarded by various organizations and institutions throughout the school year. Available to those outside our school/region, and in most cases, you apply directly to the organization.

  • Internal awards – awarded by donors to our school/district.
