School Blog

With the weather getting colder we are implementing a change to the morning routine. Starting on Monday, the cafeteria doors will be unlocked at 8am. Students will be allowed to enter the building head to the cafeteria, or the library, if they so choose.

Hello Everyone,

I hope your summer is going wonderfully and that you are enjoying the clear blue skies!

I am writing to re-extend the invitation to join us for Grade 8 Orientation on Wednesday, August 31st. Our original plan was to hold orientation on September 1st but there has been a shift in the district calendar and SHSS staff will be on site on the 31sr instead of the 1st.

Our orientation open house gives students the opportunity to pick up their timetable, find their locker and map out their classes. Staff will be on hand to help. This is an informal drop in event that runs from 2:30 to 4:00 pm. Parents are welcome but students can also come by with their friends and start to navigate their new school independently.

Students who can not attend on the 31st can stop by on Friday, September 2nd to pick up their timetable any time between 9:00 and 2:00. Office staff will be on site to assist.

All students will go through an orientation with their teacher on the first day of school,Tuesday, September 6th so please do not worry if the above dates do not fit into your schedulte!

I will be in touch again as we get closer to start up.

Enjoy a lovely month of Auguse!

Chantal St-Jacques - Principal of SHSS

The next 6 weeks are busy ones at our school and we want to share our calendar of fun events with you:

Thursday, May 26th - Spring Semi-Formal Dance - hosted by Student Council - 6:45 to 9:00 pm. Tickets ($10) go on sale Tuesday, May 17th and proceeds go to Castlegar and District Community Services Society. All grades are invited!

Wednesday, June 1st - Relay for Life and SHindig - SHSS is fundraising for cancer research! Teams of participants and classes will be walking the relay circuit throughout the day. Our SHindig outdoor assembly, including a bbq, music, games and general fun, will run from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. This will be a great day for students to play, build school spirit and raise funds for a very worthy cause.

Thursday, June 2nd - Community Connections Fair - hosted by Student Services staff - 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Please come by to meet over 20 community agencies who are here to support families. Visit with staff from Child and Youth Mental Health, Little Oasis Equine Therapy, Selkirk College, Community Living BC and many others while you enjoy a snack from our taco bar!

Thursday, June 9th - SHSS Learning Showcase - hosted by students and staff of SHSS - 5:30 to 7:00 pm. If a concert, a craft fair, a classroom, a workshop and a gallery had a baby, this would be it!

Our open house event is an opportunity for us to show off the talents and skills of SHSS. Hear the band, sample some of our Culinary Arts delights, cheer on student athletes in the gym, see our shops in action, watch our artists create, enjoy displays of student projects and get a feel for the positive energy of our site. Money raised by the sale of student projects and products will be donated to Castlegar and District Community Services Society. Please come by and see all that SHSS has to offer!

We are excited to bring back activities that open our doors and connect us all! Thank you for your support, encouragement and for the ongoing privilege of working with your families. I am so proud to be a part of the SHSS community.
